Appeals

A second look at the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.

Sometimes the trial court gets it wrong. Sometimes you won and the other side has appealed. Either way, an appeal is a different kind of case. It turns on the record, the law, and clear writing.

What I handle

Appeals to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, sitting as the Law Court, in civil, family and probate cases. I handle appeals from my own cases and take on appeals for people who were represented by someone else at trial.

Time matters

In most cases, a notice of appeal must be filed within 21 days after the court enters the judgment. If you're thinking about an appeal, call right away so we have time to look at it properly.

What to expect

  1. I review the judgment and the record and tell you honestly whether an appeal is worth it.
  2. If it is, I file the notice and order the transcripts.
  3. I write the brief and argue the case before the Law Court.
