About Matt

I'm Matt Lauzon, and I founded Upstream Law.

Before I practiced law, I co-founded and led venture-backed companies. I hired and led teams, raised capital, negotiated deals, and made hard calls with a lot riding on them. I know what it's like to be the one paying the bill and waiting on the answer.

That background shapes how I practice. I start where a business owner starts: what are we trying to accomplish, what will it cost, and what is the soundest path there. I'm at home in a courtroom and at a negotiating table, and I know which one a problem needs.

I studied at Babson College and earned my law degree at the University of Maine School of Law. I'm licensed to practice law in Maine, was admitted to the bar in 2022, and practiced at Moncure & Barnicle before opening Upstream Law in Brunswick.

Outside the office

When it isn't winter, you can often find me outside, barefoot, with my cat Claire as my sidekick. I left Boston and came back to Maine because the people here are real.

I've been a vocal voice in my community on recovery from trauma and addiction, transparency in government, and equality in the workplace.

I've never been married and I don't have kids. I've come to see that as a strength. I bring no story of my own into your family's case, just my full attention, and it probably means I work too much, which is good news for my clients. At this point in my life, family law is how I help at least a few more kids grow up with a real shot at a healthy, happy adult life.

I measure my own success by how many people I help reach their own version of success.

Representative work

These are real results from the last two years. They're a handful of examples, not the whole list, and I've kept the details general and the dates approximate to protect my clients' confidentiality.

  • 2025 to 2026. Secured a divorce judgment for my client after a contested hearing, saw the other side's appeal to the Law Court dismissed, and then enforced the judgment through a settlement with a payment plan and tax protections.
  • Fall 2026. Won a final two-year protection order after a contested hearing, with the court ordering the other party to pay my client's attorney's fees.
  • 2025 to 2026. Represented a grandparent in a contested parental-rights case that ended with the child staying in her home.
  • Fall 2026. Resolved a neighbor easement fight in Superior Court through mediation on my client's terms, with a recorded easement agreement.
  • 2026. Obtained a judgment against a contractor who kept my clients' deposit, and pursued collection through a writ of execution.
  • Spring 2025. Briefed a divorce appeal before the Law Court that ended with the attorney-fee award against my client vacated.
  • Fall 2026. Resolved parental rights and child support by agreement, saving the family a final hearing.

Past results do not guarantee a similar outcome. Every case depends on its own facts.
